Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center

 

     Young Artists Training Program June 22 - July 14 10am - 3pm
This successful program is beginning its third year in training young people to becoming working, selling artists the numerous steps to learning what an artist does to prepare for art exhibitions, festivals and sells.  For 17 days Students work with renowned local artists in different mediums including photography, who develop and hone artist skills including teaching writing artist's statements, business skills, presentations, framing and tagging.  After the art work has been juried by the instructor and the student peers, the work will be exhibited for sale at the international Ann Arbor Summer Art Festival beginning Wednesday, July 15 through Saturday July 18.

Each student will have an opportunity working the tent in Ann Arbor for an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.

     
     The Atrical Experience June 29 - July 24 10am - 3pm
For Four weeks, this performing arts experience will provide young stage opportunist with an experience to develop their skills.  In singing, acting, vocal technique, dance and movement, improvisation and character skills, young performers will develop both their unique voice, as well as the ability to create in an ensemble.

A final performance will take place on Friday, July 24 at the Carr Center.

 
     JAZZ "BOOT" CAMP July 27 - August 14 10am - 3pm
Jazz "Boot" Camp gives students additional hours to enhance and build their musical skills in this 15 day rigorous crash course in the art of all that is "Jazz".  Course work and workshops include improvisation, music theory, ensemble and performance training and music through technology.

The Camp will end with concert performances at the Carr Center and the African World Festival.

Open to players with previous training in Piano, Strings, Bass, Woodwinds, Drums, Vocals, Brass.  Each student must have their own instrument.

Basic Requirements:
  •      Ages 13 - 18 years old
  •      Some training or a class in visual arts for the Young Artists Training Program
              (raw talent is passing if you can prove it)
  •      Some music class or training background and your own instrument for the Jazz "Boot" Camp
  •     Attendance is of the utmost important.  2 unexcused absentees will cause you to
              Loose your summer scholarship and chances for future scholarships
 

Be Prepared

  •   Short interview
  •   Portfolio of your work...art pieces, poetry, creative writing, photography
  •   Perform your appropriate talent...song, dance, acting, comedy
  •   1 Letter of recommendation (friends, clergy, teacher...no family members)
  •   Brief history of your accomplishments
  •   Paragraph of your interest in your choice camp
  •   You may:
    •  Complete application on day of audition

Some participating artists and musicians are: Hubert Massey and Henry Heading in Visual Art, Clarence Tabb, jr. for Photography, Shahida Nurullah for Vocals, Buddy Budson, Piano, John Douglas, Trumpet and many, many more

 

Scholarship Program

The number of scholarships are limited to capacity.
 

Each student that receives the scholarship is required to pay a daily camp fee of $5.00 per day.  Other costs, such as artist's fees, supplies, transportation to and from Ann Arbor are covered by the scholarship.
